At least three people floating down on a North Carolina river died when they went over a dam on Wednesday night, authorities said.
Two more people in the group of nine tubers were still missing on Thursday after passing over the Duke Energy dam along the Dan River, Rockingham County Emergency Services Director Rodney Cates told reporters.
The incident was witnessed by a Duke Energy worker who called 911.
The four injured tubers were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities used boats and helicopters to try to find the missing people.
According to Cates, it’s not uncommon for recreation seekers to float on the river near the dam. But usually, people get off their tubes or rafts and walk around the dam that is marked by signs, he said.
The identities of the three people who died were not immediately released.
