Thirteen COVID-19 patients in western India were killed in a hospital fire early Friday, officials said.
The blaze broke out on the second-floor intensive care unit of a hospital in the Virar area on the outskirts of Mumbai, said Dilip Shah, CEO of Vijay Vallabh hospital.
The hospital had been caring for about 90 patients at the time of the fire. Some patients in need of oxygen were transported to other medical facilities.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
It comes amid a massive surge in coronavirus cases in India, leaving the nation in short supply of oxygen, medical staffers and supplies.
On Thursday, India reported over 314,000 new COVID-19 infections, the highest daily total in the world since the pandemic began.
