At least nine people were shot — two of them fatally — at the crowded oceanfront in Virginia Beach late Friday night, local police said.

The Virginia Beach Police Department had several suspects in custody early Saturday, according to the Norfolk-based station 13NewsNow.

One of the fatalities was a person shot by the police at 20th Street and Pacific Avenue — a block from the main shooting location on Atlantic Avenue, the station tweeted.

Additionally, one police officer was struck by a car at the scene, and had to be taken to the hospital; the officer is expected to live, the station said.

“VBPD is investigating a shooting involving several victims with possibly life-threatening injuries,” the department tweeted earlier.

“Large police presence at the oceanfront between 17th and 22nd St.,” the tweet continued.

“Please avoid the area at this time. More to follow as it becomes available.”

The shooting happened at two locations a block apart at just before 11:30 p.m., the station tweeted.

Several people had been hurt by the gunfire, Bruce Nedelka of Virginia Beach Department of Emergency Medical Services told the station.

Images gathered from the scene by the station show a large police presence along the beachfront community. A portion of nearby Interstate 264 was also closed, Wavy.com reported.

The circumstances of the shooting are unclear and police could not be immediately reached for comment.
